| VIP Protection

The proliferation of drones (uncrewed aerial vehicles/UAVs) has sparked growing concerns regarding the safety and security of high-profile individuals. The widespread availability of these devices has made them a potential weapon for disreputable actors, including paparazzi and parties with malicious intent. The 2018 attack on the Venezuelan President, Nicolás Maduro, serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with UAVs, highlighting the urgent need for regulatory measures and security protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.

However, despite these risks, drones can also represent a valuable tool for the police, security personnel and special forces tasked with safeguarding high-profile individuals. UAVs are already employed by such teams for surveillance purposes, and the flexibility of counter-drone deployment makes them particularly well-suited for VIP visits and other short-term events. To maximise their effectiveness, counter uncrewed aerial systems (CUAS) measures must be designed to provide operational agility and distinguish between friendly and hostile UAVs, thus enhancing the security of high-value assets.
